Throughout their long history the Standing Stones of Calanais have had many names. The current name of Calainais is the original Gaelic form of the name which is anglicized to Callanish.  Other names the stones have been known as are Callernish and  Classerniss.  In Gaelic, megaliths or large standing stones are known as either: Tursachan – a place of mouring or pilgrimage; or Fir bhreige – false men.
